Documenting underground mine operations

Coal Services commissioned an underground photography assignment at Glencore’s Bulga Coal operation to update and expand their existing image library. The imagery was required for use across a wide range of internal and external channels, including communications, reporting, training materials, and broader media use.

The brief was focused on capturing authentic, operational imagery that accurately reflected modern underground mining and mines rescue environments, while adhering to strict safety, PPE, and site access requirements.

Working in a live underground environment

All photography was completed underground, in low-light conditions and confined spaces typical of active coal mining operations. The work required close coordination with site personnel to ensure safe access, correct PPE presentation, and minimal disruption to ongoing operations.

The focus was on real working moments rather than posed imagery — documenting rescue personnel, equipment, and teamwork in situ to produce a practical and believable visual record of underground rescue capability.

Outcomes

The final image set delivered Coal Services with a refreshed, contemporary image library suitable for long-term use across multiple platforms. The imagery provides a consistent visual reference for underground rescue operations, safety practices, and personnel, supporting both operational communication and public-facing materials.
