Documenting Road Construction Equipment in Use
Prime Creative Media commissioned Matt Shearer to photograph Porter Hire equipment operating on an active Fulton Hogan road construction project near Singleton. The photography was produced for an Earthmovers & Excavators editorial feature covering three Ammann rollers supplied by Porter Hire — an AP240 multi-tyred roller, ARS150 pad drum roller and ASR130 smooth drum roller. The brief called for authentic operational photography, with an emphasis on the machines working in real site conditions rather than cleaned or staged presentation shots.
Scope of Work
The project required a mix of road construction, machinery and editorial photography, including:
Ammann road rollers working on site
Individual images of the new AP240 multi-tyred roller
Group images showing all three machines together
Action photography during active road construction
Operators and site activity
Equipment working in realistic roadwork conditions
Wider views showing the surrounding civil construction environment
The photography needed to clearly communicate both the machinery itself and the real-world application of the equipment on site.
Working on an Active Road Construction Site
The shoot took place during active road construction works, requiring coordination with site personnel and awareness of moving plant, work zones and operational restrictions. Rather than interrupting the work to create staged scenes, the photography was planned around the construction activity already taking place. This allowed the final images to show the rollers performing their intended role while maintaining the authenticity expected by readers of a specialist construction publication.
Editorial Brief
Prime Creative specifically requested action-based photography, with the machines being used rather than presented as static product shots. The newly supplied AP240 roller was a priority, while the brief also called for images showing the complete group of Ammann machines together.
The resulting photography balanced:

Outcome
The finished photography was published by Earthmovers & Excavators in a feature titled “Fulton Hogan are on a roll thanks to Porter Group.” The article documented the use of Porter Hire-supplied Ammann rollers on the Glendonbrook Road project and credited Matt Shearer for the photography. The assignment provided a practical set of editorial images showing heavy road construction equipment operating in a genuine civil infrastructure environment.
